The Medical Assistant diploma program at PITC Institute is a program designed to prepare the student with a strong foundation on which to build a successful career as a competent Medical Assistant. The program concentrates on providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform routine administrative and clinical tasks in a variety of healthcare settings. Duties for the graduates of this program may include answering telephones, greeting patients, scheduling appointments, taking medical histories, recording vital signs, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, sterilizing medical instruments, instructing patients about medications and special diets, drawing blood, performing EKG (electrocardiograms), removing sutures, and changing dressings. Instruction occurs in a combination of classroom and laboratory settings. Graduates will be able to become CPR certified, upon successful completion of that exam. Additionally, students will be eligible to sit for the National Certification exam, given by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) and will earn the National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) credential upon successful completion of the exam. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions as Medical Assistants, Medical Administrative Assistants, EKG Technicians, Phlebotomy Technicians and more. Graduates may elect to work in a Hospital, Private Practice, Urgent Care facility or other outpatient or inpatient clinical setting.

At the successful completion of the Medical Assistant program, students will be able to:

 

 • Demonstrate effective communication skills as a medical assistant professional

 

• Comprehend, define and appropriately use medical terminology,

 

• Apply knowledge of pharmacology and traditional and non-traditional forms of patient care and treatment

 

• Describe the structural organization of the human body and the functions of those structures

 

• Demonstrate accurate and precise documentation

 

• Accurately use electronic health records system software.

 

• Perform functions of the administrative medical assistant such as, appointment scheduling, referral creations and telecommunications skills

 

• Perform within the scope of practice for a Medical Assistant

 

• Perform in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines

 

• Verify patient information, and maintain patient records

 

• Display technical precision in taking vital signs and performing clinical duties

 

• Perform CLIA  waived lab testing

 

• Assist in traditional and non-traditional practice settings

 

• Function with the knowledge of patient diversity and sensitivity to patients and their families

 

• Demonstrate critical thinking based on knowledge of specific subject matter.

 

• Prepare the patient and the patients’ chart before the physician enters the room

 

• Conduct patient interview and record necessary medical history

 

• Practice Standard Precautions

 

• Demonstrate awareness in responding to emergency situations

 

• Perform adult, child and infant CPR and First Aid

 

• Summarize the Patient Bill of Rights

 

• Demonstrate empathy in communicating with patients, family and staff

 

• Recognize and implement office policies and procedures such as; appointment scheduling, telephone skills, preauthorization and referral creation

 

• Perform procedural coding

 

• Perform diagnostic coding

 

• Respond to issues of confidentiality and work with the guidelines of (HIPAA)- The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

 

• Identify personal safety precautions as outlined by (OSHA)- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration

 

• Incorporate cognitive knowledge in performance of the psychomotor and affective domains in practice as Medical Assistants
